今年的聖誕節，我們邀請了鄰居來家裡吃午餐。菜式沒有什麼花巧，只是烤了一隻雞和火腿，一碟芽甘藍、因為是西餐，下廚的當然是廚神而不是我了。
鄰居從台灣帶來了一些香腸和魚丸子，說是節慶時才吃的美食。不用煮，大家當小吃的一塊塊撿來吃。
聖誕節大家都會烘薑餅人(gingerbread man)，薑餅人的童話故事小朋友都懂。
那是一個人型的薑餅，從廚房滾到屋外去，小朋友一直追，也追不到。薑餅人很神氣地說：「追我吧追我吧。」所有動物和小朋友都在後面跑，薑餅人卻越滾越快，不斷地笑大家抓它不到。
最後薑餅人碰見花園裡的花貓，花貓在陽光曬太陽睡懶覺，儘管薑餅人不斷氣牠，牠就是動也不動。
薑餅人不服，越走越近，說：「我知道你一定追不到我的。」
結果，花貓一爪抓住薑餅人，咕嚕一聲，薑餅人就成了花貓的點心了。
小朋友最喜歡在聖誕節吃薑餅人。不過，廚神沒有烘薑餅人，卻烘了一個薑餅蛋糕。薑餅蛋糕不是用薑造的，只是用了薑粉。烘好的薑餅蛋糕並不辣，帶點香料味道。只吃一片薑餅蛋糕，有點單調，所以，吃時都會拌一點鮮忌廉。
再加上一壼濃濃的鐵觀音，大家就可以消磨一個下午了。

很古老的故事，或許有很多版本吧？
我知道的版本，是薑餅人無法過河，
狐狸乘機哄騙他騎上自己的背，順勢抛幾下，把薑餅人抛到嘴裏。
中學時上家政也造過薑餅。
同學做的是中間隆起裂開，我造的卻是中間塌下去。
形狀太特別，畢生難忘。
出乎意料，味道倒還過得去。

阿包在學校的聖誕表演就是跳薑餅人舞。
我最憎上家政課，所以幾乎肥佬。唯一記得做得比較像樣的是馬蹄糕。
I think I remember the fox version of the gingerbread boy story too. Sometimes, those children stories are downright scary.
I tired those dried fish eggs before. Taiwanese folks sometimes bbq them over a small fire indoor. Not my kind of snacks though I generally don’t have a problem with roes and such. Maybe they just don’t look that pretty I don’t know.

I only read the version I mentioned in my post and definitely didn’t read enough western folktales about gingerbread.
If you speak Mandarin at home, I have no doubt that you have tried those eggs before. It’s traditional Taiwanese food. But I think the sausages tasted much better. Anyway, I was the person ate the most.
Still working today? Oops…I’m going to take off for the rest of this week.

“Run! Run! As fast as you can! You can’t catch me, I’m the Gingerbread man!” That’s the famous line in the fox version that I read.
I’ve also read a “twisted” version called “Stinky Cheese Man” in the book “The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales” (http://www.amazon.com/Stinky-Cheese-Other-Fairly-Stupid/dp/067084487X). It’s a collection of popular fables with a twist. It’s kinda funny. Kids & grownups would enjoy it if you know the original fables. My son & I had a good laugh when we read it together.

Tomorrow I may go back to work, just a maybe. Then back to work next year. Came back from PA, the Great Wolf Lodge, the water park. Second time there just like last year. The kids kind of like it. Any chance they can go away and have instant noodle they like it. We only stayed there for one night.
