第二篇的作者是Wang Tao,這是他在十九世紀中寫的一篇文章──〈My Sojourn in Hong Kong〉。
The people appear rather stupid and speak a dialect that is quite unintelligible。
Land in this area is now so costly that even a few square feet can command a fantastic price。
Chicken and pigs are inexpensive, but are not as delicious as those from Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces. The ocean fish have a pronounced fishy flavour. Most fresh-water fish come from Guangzhou, but cannot be kept for very long.

Somerset Maugham alone is enough to hook me in.

Nankin:
doodoodoochang:
Matt,
Long time no see! Somerset Maugham’s article is very short in this book.

yaya:
I heard that before and it was from an American white male. Pissed me off. He didn’t say *I* was ugly but he said in general Hong Kong women are not as attractive as women in other Asian countries.
Let’s have a group hug and cry ourselves to sleep tonight, haha…..

exile from hk,
廚神just said that I don’t have a typical HK woman’s lips. hahaha…
What a coincidence! I just happened to receive a book gift from a friend and it turned out to be about HK as well. It’s called Fragrant Harbour, by John Lanchester. Unfortunately it was indeed the kind of writing about HK that, to use your words, 寫得像老外去東亞獵奇一樣 (at least from what I could glimpse of the first few pages). Unbelievably at one time this was apparently an “international bestseller” back in 2002, but I’ve never heard of it until my friend gave this to me.
Anyway, am wondering if you’d actually recommend the above “Chronicles abroad” book? It looks really interesting to me, what with all those famous literary contributors. However, you wrote that: So did the book live up to your expectations? I just checked through the Amazon.com entry about this book, and unfortunately there’s no readers’ review at all.
snowdrops,
What I meant 大錯特錯 was that there are writers other than those I recognised the name that wrote about Hong Kong with an interesting perspective. I’m curious to find out how the famous writes wrote about Hong Kong.
